Profile
For over 25 years Matt has been a patent attorney and lawyer with one of
Australasia’s top IP firms, helping innovators protect and commercialise
their IP globally. He took a career break in 2024 to expand his skills by
completing a Master’s degree in Data Science at the University of Auckland,
and then in 2025 took an opportunity to relocate with his family to San
Francisco. Since then, he has joined as an IP consultant with ET IP,
offering a unique blend of IP experience and data science skills.
His IP experience has focused on guiding startups, small businesses and
corporates as they build IP portfolios designed for international markets —
particularly across North America, Europe, and Asia‑Pacific. The strategies
he’s developed have supported clients expanding overseas, filing across
major jurisdictions, and navigating cross‑border challenges. He has a strong
understanding of how different IP systems interact and how founders can
position their IP for global success. He is also using his data science
skills to help improve the way IP services are delivered to clients.
Matt personally invests in early‑stage innovation through angel funds and
enjoys helping founders think through IP questions as they build. He’s
particularly interested in the intersection of IP, data, and early‑stage
ecosystems.
